Position. Draw. Aim. Release. Bang. Position. Draw. Aim. Release. Bang. Steady, I coach myself. Just one step at a time. Position. Draw. Aim. Release. Bang. Not much more, and then it was done. "Good work!" The instructor barks. Very sincere. Most of the others sagged in exhaustion. Not me. I held my head high. If I hadn't been able to keep up, I would have been cut long ago. "Number seven!"
"That's me," I answer, stepping forward.
The man assumes a stunned expression and steps backwards in shock, almost like my appearance is a physical blow. "You're a girl!" I have to bite my tongue to stop myself from commenting. I had a whole repertoire of comebacks for this kind of situation. Are you saying my mommy was lying? Oh thank god! I was wondering what these were! I prefer the phrase 'non-male person.'' Some people have actually fallen for that line. Once he'd gotten his expression under control, he continues his original thought. "Green card. Present at a later date for details."  I'm   impressed. Some people would have backtracked and given the best male the place. Your green card was your invitation to the presenting of the details of where to go to begin. If they gave you this information in public, there would be gatecrashers and they would not be able to give the confidential information.

The date was set for tomorrow evening. That didn't give me much time to prepare. I returned home to tell my family, an hour's walk. My horse was given to my sister since she got a 'real 'job. My parents don't approve of me going for the military. Thinking on the long trip home, I realised I had seen a lot of green cards being handed out. A lot. They told us from the very beginning that hardly anyone would get in. Maybe there were more reasons for a secondary meeting than we were told.

I told my parents the good news over dinner. They tried to hide their shock. Nice try. I knew them too well for them to hide anything. "I'm not sure that this is a good idea." My mother had never voiced her real opinion about this before. "You never said anything before."
My Father made a gesture that could have been anything. "You were always an, unusual child. But we always thought this was just a phase, that you would come to your senses. You know, be more like..." he hesitated.
"My sister. But I'm not her! You never said anything when I told you I was trying!"
Father burst out with "We never thought you'd actually get in!" And then promptly choked on his foot. Mother reached out. "Lexi..." she implored. But I was already gone.
The first part of this story. If anyone likes it I'll add another bit.
